Eerstehulp-opleiding sal by 'n later geleentheid aangebied word.

The crime statistics for July show that there has been a 35% reduction in the total number of incidents in Bettys Bay. The authorities have ascribed this reduction partly to an increase in poaching activities. The implication is that as poaching activities are curtailed by law enforcement, the same people will resort to theft from properties. For this reason we must maintain and even increase our efforts to keep the neighbourhood safe.

We need to be able to expand our operations such that we can provide an improved service to Bettys Bay by being able to do operations from 18h00 to 06h00 on selected days. With the limited resources available to us we are currently working a 3 hour shift 2 to 3 times per week. The focus this month is an attempt to grow the relatively small group of people who do operations in Bettys Bay. Currently there are only 36 people in our operational team and of these 47% work regularly.

There is a perception that this is dangerous work but that is definitely not the case as we have never had an incident where any of our members have been involved in a threatening situation. The modus operandi is to observe and report on the radio, we do not apprehend any suspects. We have husband and wife teams and teams of women who regularly partake in operations.

We are appealing to residents of Bettys Bay to join us in operations and to this end there is a training programme organised for the 12th and 13th of August at Crassula Hall starting at 08h30. We are confident that the training can be completed in one day and will be urging the trainers to complete the training in one day. You are required to bring your bar coded ID document to the training. Certificates and equipment will be provided to participants who complete the course. At a later time first aid training will also be provided. This training is provided by the Western Cape Provincial Government’s Department of Community Safety and is specifically focused on Neighbourhood Watch Requirements.

The damage to property could have been significantly worse during the fire in Sunny Seas. Residents are reminded that making a fire when the wind is blowing is extremely dangerous and must be avoided. When lighting a braai fire please ensure that you have a hosepipe at hand and kill the fire as soon as you are finished.

We have completed the camera trials with the first company and have budget prices for camera installations; we are currently in the process of obtaining information from alternative companies so that we can present various options to residents at a public meeting.

We will be providing info to residents in due course and we would welcome any contributions as the cameras will not be cheap.
